Discord is built for chat, not file hosting, and the upload limit shows it. A 30-second 1080p clip from a game capture tool can already be over the free cap. You have three real options: shrink the file, pay for more, or post a link.

Discord has moved its free limit up and down over the years, and Nitro tiers change too. If the number in the error message differs from the table, trust the app.
Option 1: Compress or trim the file
This works for short clips and small images, and it is worth trying first if you are just a little over.
- Trim the clip. Most capture tools (Xbox Game Bar on Windows, the built-in editor in Photos on Mac and iPhone) let you cut the start and end. Ten seconds of the good part beats sixty of waiting.
- Lower the resolution or bitrate. Re-exporting a 1440p clip at 720p shrinks it a lot. The downside is obvious: your friends see a blurrier version.
- Zip text-heavy files. Logs, config folders and source code compress well. Game mods with textures and audio usually do not.
The catch is that every one of these throws away something, whether that is length, quality or your time.
Option 2: Pay for Nitro
Nitro raises your upload cap and adds other perks. If you already share large files on Discord every day, it may be worth it. If you just need to send one 200 MB mod pack this weekend, a subscription for that alone is overkill, and the people you share with still have their own limits when they want to send something back.
Option 3: Post a download link
This is the path most people end up on. Upload the file somewhere, paste the link in Discord, done. Enzonic Send is free and does not ask for an account for transfers up to 500 MB.
On a PC or Mac: drag the file from File Explorer or Finder onto the uploader on this page. For a folder of mods or a project, drag the whole folder; it is zipped in your browser and the folder structure is kept.
On a phone: tap the uploader. On iPhone, Safari offers Photo Library, Take Photo or Choose File (the Files app). On Android, Chrome opens the system file picker where you can pick from Gallery or Downloads. There are also Android and iOS apps; see the apps page.
When the upload finishes, you get three ways to share:
- a link to paste in a channel or DM,
- a 6-digit code to read out in voice chat (friends type it at /receive),
- a QR code, handy when a friend is next to you with their phone.
Because the file is stored on Cloudflare's network, you can close the tab and log off. Your friends can download it later, until the expiry you chose.
Picking the right settings for a server
Public servers and private DMs need different settings.
Private DM or small friend group
- Expiry: 1 day or 3 days
- No password needed
- No download limit
Larger community server
- Expiry: 3 days, or up to 7 days if you are signed in
- Download limit of 50 or 100 so a leaked link does not get passed around forever
- Optional title and message so people know what they are grabbing
Something private, like a work file or personal photos
- Password on, shared by a separate message
- Download limit of 1 or 5
- Shortest expiry that works
You can delete the transfer at any time, and files are removed automatically when they expire. Transfers are encrypted in transit and at rest, but they are not end-to-end encrypted.
Things a link cannot do
To set expectations honestly:
- No inline preview. Discord will not embed a playable video from the link. People download the file and play it locally.
- 2 GB is the ceiling, even with an account. Very long raw recordings may need trimming or a service with a higher cap; see free file transfer services compared.
- Links expire. That is a feature for privacy, but it means a link posted in a pinned message will stop working after at most 7 days.
Common Discord upload errors
"Your files are too powerful." That is Discord's message for going over the limit. Use one of the options above.
Upload stalls at 100%. Discord is processing the file. If it fails repeatedly on a large file near the cap, a link is more reliable.
Recipient sees "This file may be dangerous." Discord warns about some file types. Zipped mods and executables trigger this often. A link from a source your friends recognize helps, but they should still only open files from people they trust.

What is the Discord file size limit without Nitro?
At the time of writing, free Discord accounts can upload files up to 10 MB each. Discord has changed this number before, so check its support pages if you see a different cap.
Does Nitro raise the upload limit?
Yes, Nitro subscriptions allow larger uploads than free accounts. The exact limit depends on the tier and can change, so check Discord's current plan details.
Does boosting a server increase the file limit?
Server boost levels have affected upload limits for everyone in that server. Check the server's boost perks in Discord to see what currently applies.
Why does my video look worse after uploading to Discord?
Discord shows an embedded preview that may be lower quality than the original. Sending a download link gives the recipient the exact file you uploaded.
Is it safe to post a download link in a public Discord server?
Anyone who sees the link can download the file. For public channels use a short expiry or a download limit, or add a password and share it only with the right people.
